STOP

Media trust has been at the center of many studies for decades; the richness and diversity of the results depend also on the granularity of the measurement used.
Media trust may be studied in regard to media systems, types of media, media ownership, media outlets, or even journalists. Media trust is related to social connectedness; the perceptions of bias; and the audience’s selection of news media. In general, trust influences media effects and has many social consequences.

STOP! will focus on what may be called selective trust.

STOP!

STOP! investigates the heuristics and consequences (particularly political polarization in each level mentioned above) of selective trust among young voters (18-19 years old). The present research proposal applied to investigation of the Italian case. The main objective is to collect data in order to design and develop a gamified tool applicable to different social media which would accompany and educate young Italian users in their experiences with news items through social media. Following the research results, a digital tool will be developed to induce people to use a more pluralized and certified by fact-checkers range of sources which provide good-quality and reliable information.

The research project addresses three main research questions:

1

What heuristics do young Italian voters use in selecting which news items to trust?

2

How do those heuristics affect their attitudes in terms of polarization?

3

What remedy in terms of use of social media may be applied?
